A Window into Our Classroom

Thank you, families, for supporting your child at home with the remote learning.  I am grateful that we can be at school and am so impressed with the students.  I see students being willing to take on challenges and learn from their mistakes.  We're getting to know each other and growing strong as a community.  💜

Hybrid and Remote Learning this week:

-  Students will have a paper packet but will need to access the story "Not Norman" by Kelly Bennett in Google Classroom.

-Headphones and charged Ipads should come to school every day
We have practiced opening Google Classroom several times in class so your child should be able to get started independently.  Please let me know if you have any questions.

-Students will take the reading and math NWEA testing on the Ipad this week.

Having fun on our AWESOME playground!

This week our class finished our All About Me slideshow with Mr. Chartray.  Students were able to learn about their fellow classmates.

Ask your child to show you this slideshow in Google Classroom.
Students also took part in an I Can, I Pad program, and Google Classroom training.

Reading:
We know runners have the stamina for running.  How can readers build stamina for reading?  Each student will use a reading log this week to observe reading habits and patterns.   At home, please help your child keep track of the time they are reading.

This week students spent time learning to choose "Good Fit" books.
Good Fit books are...
-books that are of interest to the reader
-have no less than five tricky words on the page
-can be completed within about a week

If students need books, I will be sending some good fits home.  Please help your child keep the book in their folder to go back and forth to school. Thank you!

Writing:
This year, third graders will write narratives, informational texts, literary essays, and opinion speeches.  Currently, students are working on telling true stories or narratives.  Ask your child to tell you about their Authority List. :).  Students will practice telling stories to each other before writing.  The writing process includes rehearsing, planning, drafting, and revising.

Handwriting and Typing:
Students are learning how to read and write cursive.  The occupational therapist came into our room this past week to help students with their pencil grip and letter formation.  We will also practice typing skills this fall.

Math:
This week's learning targets included; basic addition facts, number patterns, and telling time to the nearest minute.  Next week's targets will be adding and subtracting 2 digit numbers and solving number stories.

Science:
This week we'll learn how clouds are formed and begin observing weather patterns.  Students will collect data and make predictions about temperature, precipitation, and wind speed.
