Mrs. Forsyth's Blog week of 9/24 written by the students!

WToday we harvested the Pond Cove gardens and we are donating the food to Judy's pantry.  We also composted the dead broccoli plants and flowers.  We had fun smelling plants and flowers.
Our class used team work to find items in Natureland on a scavenger hunt.  Some of the items were pine trees, sunflower seeds and picking up trash.

-This week we got new seats and will learn to work together.
-In math we created fact family houses to learn our multiplication and division facts.
-We're learning more cursive letters everyday for example a, c, t, h and g.

-In science we created hoppers with elastic bands and cardboard and used a ruler to see how high they could jump.   This activity helped us to learn more about the forces of push and pull.  Then we worked together to see if we could change the hopper to make it jump higher.

-In reading we started a new read aloud called The Fantastic Secret of Owen Jester.

We're working on choosing "just right" books and using our reading logs to set goals for more reading.
To help us better understand what we're reading we learned how to "Stop and Jot":
1.  What is happening?
2.  Who is the character?
3.  Where is the character now?

-Writing: We are practicing telling true stories and using storytelling voices by adding action and dialogue.  Some of our true stories are about important people or places.

This week's blog from the students

Dear families,

This an exciting week because the students helped to write this blog!  It was a busy week with picture day and the first early release day.  With everyday that passes, we are learning more about each other and building our classroom and school community.  This class is filled with amazing scientists, readers, artists, writers and mathematicians!

We can't wait to show off our learning on Wednesday, September 27 at Open House (6:30).  Stay tuned for more information about Fall conferences and volunteering in the classroom.

Earlier this week we learned about Growth Mindset and how you can change your thinking from a fixed mindset to a growth mindset.  You can be determined, instead of saying  "I can't do this it's too hard",  change this to, "this may take some time but I can learn more by practicing."

How to "Watch for Signs" when reading and treat your reading like GOLD.
In reading we are learning how to:
-stay focused on our books by finding books that are just right.
-read new types of books and authors.
-write book recommendations for our friends in class!

Mr. Charltray taught us about the "I Can I Pad" program, this year we each have our own IPad!

We surveyed our classmates about their favorite Halloween candy and practiced bar graphs!

Spelling City will be a part of our spelling program and will
allow us to practice our spelling words using fun games.

.
Exploring magnets!
During science we found objects that would connect or attract to magnets.  We did a Mystery Science activity and learned that you can take iron fillings and mix them with silly putty.  Then you could make magnetic putty!

Other discoveries:
-magnets can push away or repel each other
-you can make a paper clip float using a magnet
-when you touch a paper clip to a magnet it still works as a magnet even though it's not attached!
-when you put iron fillings near a magnet they surround it like a flower

First blog of the year!

We're off to a great start!
Last week we spent time getting to know each other and
remembering the rules and routines at school.

Students also discussed what to do with good ideas and then worked independently to
build Lego structures and present them to the class.

Thank you very much for completing the online forms in Powerschool.  If you do not see your child's photo that is because I do not have permission to publish their photos.
Please let me know if I can help you access your child's Powerschool account

We're learning to read books and our writing like GOLD!

Photo Mingle! Thank you for the amazing photographs, the students learned so much about each other.

Math games with partners to review number sense.
